My mother was born in Kansas but grew up with her one sister & eight brothers in Elmwood Park. Father came north from Bethany Oklahoma for work and adventure. We lived in Hickory Hills as father was the Superintendent of Schools. At Christmas time we would go downtown to the Marshall Fields to look at the windows and shop. We never went to Navy Pier. I was attending a workshop at a downtown hotel in 2005. I decided to walk down to the pier. Since it was October the crowds were thin—mostly just me. As I rounded the end of the pier and started walking back toward the city the sun was setting. It was glorious.
