The cruise ship actually sails into the dome of a volcano — the caldera. The opposite shore is all volcanic rock and birds like the eruptions were only a while back in time. The eruption that created the caldera was 3600 years ago.
I never planned to go to Dubrovnik Croatia. Croatia, Bosnia, Serbia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Macedonia---the whole mess just seemed like a big hunk of hell to me. However, the cruise ship’s first port of call was Dubrovnik. It was wonderful. It is a walled city —of the medieval sort—squeezed between the Adriatic and the mountains. There were plazas, narrow streets, and terraces that held houses built up the side of the mountain. We walked down to their ‘beach’ and walked along this wall that seems to have no purpose with a gate of equal import.
